Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is removing embedded ink from the layers of skin with a laser. Lasers work by producing short pulses of intense light that selectively target the tattoo pigment while minimizing damage to the surrounding skin.

Laser Tattoo Fading

Tattoo fading is for individuals who want to lighten their existing tattoo in order to facilitate a cover up. The procedure is the same as laser tattoo removal, but requires less sessions.

How it works

How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

Laser tattoo removal is usually effective for the most part. However, there are some things to keep in mind. The laser tattoo removal treatment may create superficial burns. During the treatment the area undergoes a whitening process which usually lasts for 10-20 minutes. Some people experience bruising, swelling, or pin point bleeding. Many people develop scabs, crusts or blisters. These should heal in 1-2 weeks. The treated area may experience hypo-pigmentation (lack of normal skin colour) or hyper-pigmentation (an abundance of colour), these are usually temporary.

During your consultation, please ask questions. Enter into your treatments with realistic expectations. Generally some colours are removed easier than others. All tattoos are different and will require a different numbers of treatments.

Pretreatment

Precautions to take before your laser treatment:

No sun exposure, tanning beds and sunless tanning creams. Sun exposure decreases the effectiveness of the laser or pulsed light treatment and can increase the chance of post treatment complications.

Apply a SPF 30+ sunblock to the area to be treated when exposed to the sun.
Remove all makeup, creams or oils prior to treatment.
Discontinue use of aspirin, Motrin, Aleve or Ibuprofen products (Advil), a week to 10 days before treatment, as these may increase bruising or bleeding.

    FAQ’s

How does the laser tattoo removal treatment work?
Selective absorption of very high peak power laser light pulses by the tattoo ink in the skin causes the targeted ink particles to breakdown mechanically while significantly decreasing potential damage to surrounding tissues. The fragmented particles are then removed from the skin by the bodies immune or lymphatic system.
    How many treatments are required?
The number of required treatments is dependent on several factors, including depth of ink penetration, age of the tattoo & colour intensity- that is, lighter versus darker colours. Generally some colours are removed easier than others. All tattoos are different and will require a different numbers of treatments, however you will begin seeing results after only one or two sessions.
For tattoo fading, a few treatments might lighten a tattoo enough for a replacement to be applied over top.
How much time do you leave between treatments?
Even though most people find the area usually heals within a couple weeks, treatments are scheduled 6 to 8 weeks apart (sometimes longer) to allow your body to absorb the pigment residue completely. Some places may tell you its fine to come sooner, however rushing the process can cause more negative effects.
    How is the healing process?
Healing for tattoo removal when done properly is usually much easier and faster than healing from the original tattoo.
